The OSU Medical Center
The Ohio State University Medical Center is the only academic medical center in central Ohio and includes the College of Medicine, OSU Physicians and the OSU Health System, comprising University Hospital, James Cancer Hospital, University Hospital East, OSU Harding, Ross Heart Hospital and a network of community care sites. OSU Physicians, the practice plan of the OSU Medical Center, is composed of more than 550 regular faculty in the College of Medicine who provide high-quality and coordinated health care to Medical Center patients.
Currently, OSU Medical Center cares for more than one million patients annually, educates more than 3,500 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students in our College of Medicine and specialized schools, receives over $190 million in research funding and employs more than 12,500 faculty and staff members on one of the most comprehensive health sciences campuses in the United States.
Research
- The OSU College of Medicine's NIH research awards improved by nearly 70% over the past five years, from $45.4 million in 2000 to $77 million in 2005.
- Ohio State is ranked among the top 10 public research institutions in the country, based on rankings recently posted by the National Science Foundation, Division of Science Resources Statistics. The report is based on total research expenditures for fiscal year 2002-03, the latest information available.
Teaching
- Ohio State is ranked among the country's top medical schools in the latest 2006 edition of U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Graduate Schools.”
- U.S. News & World Report also ranked OSU among the nation's top 25 medical schools in student academic quality as well as National Institutes of Health research funding.
Patient Care
- The Ohio State University Medical Center has been ranked as one of “America’s Best Hospitals” by U.S. News & World Report for 14 consecutive years. The Medical Center achieved a personal best in the latest issue with 13 specialties recognized as among the best in the country, including: cancer, digestive disorders, geriatrics, gynecology, heart and heart surgery, hormonal, kidney disease, neurology/neurosurgery, orthopedics, respiratory, rehabilitation, urology and ears, nose and throat.
- Of the 182 central Ohio physicians ranked in the national “Best Doctors in America” survey, 145 are affiliated with OSU Medical Center.
- For the sixth consecutive year, The Ohio State University Medical Center has been named one of the country’s “Most Wired” hospitals. It also ranked as one of the 25 Most Wireless hospitals in the country by the American Hospital Association for implementing advanced information technology tools that help provide quality care and patient safety while increasing accuracy and efficiency.
